New Hampshire is one of six states in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is one of the smallest states, ranked 46th in terms of total area. It is bordered to the north by the Canadian province of Quebec, to the east by Maine, to the south by Massachusetts, and to the west by . Its coastline with the Atlantic Ocean is the shortest of any state, a mere 18 miles long. One of the original thirteen colonies, the state was named after the English county of Hampshire.

Nicknamed the Granite State, New Hampshire was the first state to have its own state constitution. It is one of only two states that does not have a sales tax or income tax; Alaska is the other one.

Historically New Hampshire's economy has been based on manufacturing but has more recently begun to diversify into services and light industry. The retail sector is particularly strong along the state's borders as residents from neighboring states shop in New Hampshire to avoid sales taxes in their own state.
